Healthy Communications … At Health Opera we believe that healthy communications deserve an encore. Words aptly used can build business partnerships, strengthen teams, and enhance personal relationships. We communicate to express our ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Several factors can interfere with effective communications causing stress, distance, time wasted and in some cases unnecessary friction. Here’s some practical information to bettering communications. If you keep these principles in mind you will win the Oscar for a great performance. Look, listen, launch and learn are some basics for establishing a rapport with others. When someone is talking to you always look carefully for those nonverbal cues. Nonverbal cues can indicate if the person is bored, angry, annoyed, or otherwise not receiving the message well. Listen for content, clarity and match the words with the nonverbal body language. Is the person saying one message; but the body language is saying something else? Also be aware of the barriers to listening such as ignoring conflicting information or becoming too emotional. These drawbacks in addition to a few others, can block effective communications. After you have looked and listened carefully, then launch your message. Oftentimes we talk before gathering pertinent information which can easily be achieved with following this format. It takes practice to hold your peace and then respond. Remember words are hard to retract. Therefore practice silence. Silence is more than golden it’s healthy. Then learn by reflecting on the message given. We oftentimes miss golden opportunities because we do not take the time to assess what the person was communicating. Ask for feedback to make sure you are receiving the message correctly. Other pointers for effective communication are covered in the seminars Tough Talks: Communicating to Get Positive Results or Conflict Resolution. See the sections on Healthy Seminars or Corporate Wellness.
